Studio Workouts

Prior to my 30s, I was fairly inactive. At most I'd go on hikes once/week, but always gasped for air at any incline. I would try random exercises here and there, but nothing was consistent. In 2015, at age 30, a friend encouraged me to check out a studio workout class with her. Since then, I have been consistently working out 3 - 5 times/week. And it's all thanks to studio/in-class workouts. They are effective because my motivation is low to work out alone, and my current living situation doesn't have the space for me to do so.

There are so many options and I'm in between memberships now and want to decide on a new routine. Below is my short list. The pricing options are based on numbers from Bay Area Peninsula studios.

I may go back to CrossFit, but would need to supplement it with yoga and/or running to round out my workout regimen.

OrangeTheory
Equipment is wiped down all the time by patrons. Bathrooms are for individuals, and the floor is usually wet from people not drying their hands thoroughly under the air dryer (no paper towels made available). Showers are usable.
Few amenities. There may be regular sized tampons, cheap deodorant, hair dryer. There are showers, but no towel service. Lockers without passcodes but you can bring your own lock.
HIIT workout. Treadmills, rowing, and floor exercises. Music is pumping, and the instructors are enthusiastic. The workouts are somewhat challenging if you challenge yourself, however the bar is not set too high. The patrons are generally somewhat fit, or trying to get fit.
$28/class for non-members

$18/class for members

$129/month for 8 classes on a limited Founder's rate (no longer available)

$189/month for unlimited classes
SoulCycle
Equipment cleaned after every class. Bathrooms are kept stocked, but floors can be wet as some locations are small and have high traffic. Showers are clean.
Amenities are top-of-the-line including showers, towel service, spin shoe service (for extra $), lockers with passcodes, tampons, deodorant, hair dryer, hair spray, lotion, cotton swabs, hair ties, and shaving razor.
Spin cycling is great for cardio, but not for muscle building. If you have rhythm and like to dance, classes are extremely fun! Music is carefully chosen as you bike to the beat of the rhythm. Instructors are very enthusiastic and patrons have their favored instructors. The atmosphere is a little hoity-toity. Maybe because it originated from NYC.

F45
Equipment is sometimes wiped down by patrons. Tidy and clean facility. I've never taken a shower here, but I assume they're clean as they don't get a lot of traffic.
Few amenities. Cubby holes for your belongings. Towel service. I think there are tampons?
HIIT workout. The concept is great as exercise movements emphasize everyday function. Simple and clear movements are performed while music plays and an instructor pushes you along the workout. It is as challenging as you make it for yourself. Fitness level of patrons vary (similar to OrangeTheory). F45 is globally recognized and have many locations in big cities.

Barry's Bootcamp
Equipment is sometimes wiped down by patrons. Unsure if it is wiped down by staff. Tidy and clean facilities. Showers and locker rooms are clean though high traffic.
Top-of-the-line amenities. Showers, towel service (regular and chilled for after your workout), lockers with passcodes and a plug for you to charge your phone during class, tampons, deodorant, makeup remover, hair dryer, cotton swabs, hair ties, shaving razors, ...
HIIT workout. Treadmill and focused (depending on the day of the week) weight training on the floor. Everyone is EXTREMELY FIT (and young). It's as if all patrons are models. Some men and women work out without shirts. It's very challenging with loud music and super enthusiastic instructors. Very hoity-toity. From Los Angeles.

CrossFit
Equipment is almost never wiped down. Facilities are dusty and cold as they are usually out of converted warehouses. Showers (if any) are infrequently used and have the bare essentials.
Absolutely nothing. Maybe someone's personal hair dryer was brought in and left there for all to use. Ask around for someone's spare hair tie.
Technically difficult movements. VERY CHALLENGING workouts that are geared toward muscle building. Can promote risk to injury if you aren't trained well and/or instructors aren't great to give you honest feedback. Bf will say culture is "broey," but I think CrossFit boxes build great communities. CrossFit is also globally recognized so you can drop in to classes anywhere in the world.
